Gate Valve Details 2

This figure shows how the valve stem is made to move in and out of a valve body. In this case we are considering a "rising-stem" valve. In this case the stem is not held in place, but allowed to move in or out as it is rotated.

Notice the top of the valve is held in place by a yoke (A). The yoke holds the valve sleeve in place. The threaded part of the stem mates with the sleeve threads. As a result, when the handwheel is turned, the stem screws in or out.
