Types of Packing
There are two main types of compression packing.
a. Automatic Packing
b. Compression Packing
The figure provided here illustrates usage of automatic packing. Automatic packing material comes in many shapes. On the left hand side of the illustration, you see two common types.
a. The packing labeled “A” is referred to as the “U-cup” automatic packing.
b. The other packing, labeled “B” is referred to as “V Pressure Ring”.
The right hand side part of the illustration demonstrates how a “V” shaped automatic packing is installed in the stuffing box of a pump.
The main advantage of the compression type packing is that it uses thin contact lips that reduce heat generated by friction.
In reference to the figure shown here, note that the left side of the packing is pressurized. Therefore, as the pressure increases, the packing elements open up, thereby improving the sealing action. Since the sealing action of this packing depends upon the pressure it is subjected to, it is referred to as "automatic packing."
