Packing Location Detail
This figure provides a detailed view of a part of the previous graphic.
In the figure, "A" is illustrating the wet region inside the pump. The ellipse is indicating the region where we provide the seal to prevent water from leaking. The ellipse also shows five packing rings and a lantern ring in the center of the packing rings. The region where lantern ring is installed is connected to a seal water supply line. This line supplies water to the packing for cooling and lubrication purposes.
The packing material placed around the shaft provides the seal. In later sections we will learn more details about some common sealing mechanisms.
