Compression Packing
The figure provided here illustrates compression packing material that is used to seal a pump shaft. The packing material generally has following characteristics:
a. Rectangular cross section.
b. Flexible so that it can be compressed.
c. Corrosion resistant.
d. Tough, so that it can withstand rubbing against the shaft without self-destruction.
e. Soft, so that it does not score the shaft.
g. Good conductor of heat, so that it can transmit heat away from the contact surfaces.
