Basic Components - continued.
Packing
This refers to coils of soft material which is wrapped around the stem to close the space between the bonnet and the stem. This is how we seal the valve body and prevent the liquid in the valve body to leak out along the stem.
Gland
This component is used to press against the packing and force it to spread out, thereby creating a good seal. The gland is a movable part and it is forced downward by gland bolts. As the gland bolts are tightened, the gland moves downward. If you find leakage along the stem, you should gently tighten the gland bolts.
Gland Bolt Nut
This is one of two nuts, connected to stationary bolts that are used to force the gland downward.
Bonnet
This is essentially a cover for the valve body. It also provides means for connection and support of the external valve elements such as valve stem and the packing gland.
