Basic Components of a Gate Valve

In this section we will look at some key components of a valve. Most of these components are found in other valves as well, in one form or another.

Handwheel Nut

This nut is used to secure and hold the handwheel in place.

Handwheel

This round wheel is manually rotated to move the disc up or down. Usually clockwise (as you look at it) motion closes the valve and anticlockwise motion opens the valve.

Yoke Sleeve

This sleeve is connected to the handwheel and is equipped with threads on the inner circumference. When this sleeve is rotated, it forces the threaded stem to screw up or down. The sleeve itself does not go up or down.

Stem

This is the main moving part of a valve. On one side it is shaped like a threaded rod which acts like a screw in the yoke sleeve. On the other end the valve disc is attached.
