Step 5: Select the packing material

Using the manufacturer’s recommendations, select the proper packing material.

Step 6: Prepare packing rings

Use a length of the packing material, wrap it around the valve stem as shown. Note the point where the packing starts to overlap. Mark two lines at 45 degrees as shown. Remover the marked packing from the stem. Cut it along the marked lines. This should give you one ring of the packing material. Wrap it around the valve stem again to make sure it fits snugly.

Step 7: Make more rings

Use the cut piece as a sample (pattern), and cut several more pieces.
