Burners - Continued

Heavy oil is atomized in oil-guns as it is sprayed in the furnace. Two types of oil guns are used for this purpose. In the first type, oil guns are constructed in such a manner that high pressure oil is forced through small holes at the tip of the gun. This breaks up the oil stream into small particles. In the second type, oil guns are provided with steam along with fuel oil. The purpose of steam is to break up the oil stream into small particles. Usually the steam pressure is kept at least 15 psig higher than that of oil.

In firebox, the ratio between air and fuel is controlled, to provide the specified amount of “excess air.”

Bridgewall Section

Many of the furnaces are provided with physical division walls inside the furnace. These walls are constructed with refractory bricks and are referred to as “bridgewalls”. Separation of furnace into various sections allows even distribution of heat inside the firebox.
