Burners and Air Registers
To facilitate combustion, the furnace fireboxes are provided with burners. For proper combustion, the fuel needs to be provided with an adequate amount of air. To achieve adequate amount of air flow, burners are provided with air registers in close proximity. Usually burners use any or all of the following types of fuel:
a. Heavy fuel oil (such as No. 6 oil)
b. Light fuel oil (such as diesel or heavy distillate). Light oil is usually used in the ignitors. The purpose of ignitors is to light-off the main burners. The ignitors are provided with more expensive fuel which is easier to light-off. Once the ignitors light-off the main fuel, they are shut down to save expensive ignitor fuel.
c. Natural gas
d. Propane. (Propane is usually used in ignitors).
