The Combustion Process

The figure provided here illustrates the chemical reactions pertaining to combustion of carbon, hydrogen and methane.

As stated earlier, combustion is a chemical reaction. That means chemicals react in fixed ratio to each other to produce combustion products. In the following paragraphs we will see how various chemicals react and what chemicals are produced as a result of the reaction.

You will notice that the combustion process results in creation of new chemicals, which are known as "combustion products". The flue gas consists of combustion products. You will also notice that most of the combustion products consist of carbon dioxide and water.
