Multistage Centrifugal Pumps
This figure illustrates a multistage centrifugal pump. Such a pump consists of a series of impellers mounted on one common shaft. As the shaft rotates, all of the impellers rotate. The impellers form a series, consisting of a number of single stage pumps.
The suction side for the pump is indicated by “A” in the figure. The discharge side is indicated by “B”. It is rather easy to figure out which is which. The diameter of the low pressure side (inlet) is larger than the diameter of the high pressure side (outlet).
Notice a series of impellers mounted on the shaft. The discharge from one impeller is fed to the suction side of the next impeller. This way at each successive stage, the pressure of the water keeps on increasing. These pumps are used for high pressure applications.
