Types of Centrifugal Pumps
It is helpful to know the basic nature of various types of centrifugal pumps. In this section we will provide a discussion on this subject. We will discuss some common types of centrifugal pumps.
End-Suction (Axial) Frame Mounted
The graphic provided here illustrates an End-Suction (Axial) Frame Mounted pump. This is a very common pump configuration. In the illustration provided the following items are labeled:
A. Suction side piping (behind the pump, not very visible).
B. The discharge piping.
C. Discharge side isolation valve.
D. Bearing and lubrication chamber.
E. Pump mounting and base.
F. Coupling guard.
In this design the external suction piping is directly connected to the center of the pump. The discharge end of the pump is located tangentially to the suction pipe. Usually, the discharge piping and the suction piping are at 90 degrees to each other. In the figure provide here, the discharge piping is shown at the top of the pump, while suction piping is behind the pump. The suction piping is connected directly to the center of the pump on the other side.
You can have many further sub-classifications within the End Suction main classification. Two of the common sub-classifications are:
a. Close coupled pumps: In these pumps the shaft bearings are an integral part of the pump.
b. Frame mounted pumps: This classification is characterized by a separate support system for the shaft bearings.
