Electric Motors - continued.

Operator Duties

As an operator you need to do the following main things to get reliable service from your motors:

a. Make sure they are not overloaded

b. Make sure they are clean

c. Make sure they are properly lubricated

Motor Lubrication

All electric motors are fitted with bearings to reduce friction. The types of bearings most often used are:

a. Sleeve bearings

b. Roller bearings

c. Ball bearings

Motors are designed to use grease or oil as lubricant.

You do NOT need to lubricate all electric motors. Some motors are equipped with ball bearings that are permanently lubricated or packed with grease when the motor is assembled at the factory. These bearings are usually covered with a nameplate that reads - Do Not Lubricate.

Most of the electric motors, however, do require lubrication.
