Introduction

In workplaces, many workers are injured from unexpected startup of machines or accidental release of hazardous energy. Operations and maintenance workers while operating or performing maintenance functions are prone to these types of hazards.

This module identifies the protective practices and procedures necessary to shut down and isolate machines and equipment.

An important part of the protective system is the requirement for workers to be properly trained in their role in the lockout/tagout program.

Workers are also required to perform periodic inspections to ensure the integrity of the safety systems.

OSHA believes that approximately 40 million workers need training of this type. When all of the affected people have been trained it is expected to save over 100 fatalities and over 30,000 injuries per year.
