Sight Glass

This figure illustrates a sight glass. Inspection of the sight glass is used for two purposes.

a. Oil level. Oil level should be about in the center of the glass (as shown here).

b. Oil condition. Notice that in this illustration, the oil is clear and free of impurities. Froth or floating dark matter indicates problems.
