Fuel Oil Characteristics - continued.

C. Specific Gravity

Specific gravity is the ratio between the weight of a given volume of oil at 60 deg F and weight of an equal volume of water at 60 deg F.

Specific gravities of various fuel oils:

No. 1 Oil: 0.82

No.2 Oil: 0.86

No. 4 Oil: 0.93

No. 5 Oil: 0.95

No. 6 Oil: 0.98

D. Heating Value

Heating value of a fuel is given in terms of BTUs per pound. This is the amount of heat generated when a pound of fuel oil is burned.

Heating values of various oils are as listed below:

No. 1 Oil: 137,000

No.2 Oil: 141,000

No. 4 Oil: 146,000

No. 5 Oil: 148,000

No. 6 Oil: 150,000
