Safety and Relief Valves - Continued.

The figure provided here illustrates a safety valve. A valve of this type is designed to provide a large initial opening. This allows rapid release of steam, should there be a need.

The lower side of the valve is connected to the steam drum or other pressurized component. If the internal pressure increases beyond the setpoint of the valve, the fluid presses against the spring and forces the seat to open up and discharges from the discharge side.

“C” indicates a lever, which is used to open the valve manually, should there be a need.

“G” indicates the valve spring.

“Y” is showing the valve yoke.
