Compression Packing Replacement
It is very important to install compression packing properly. Improper installation may reduce the packing life by as much as 80%.
Use proper tools to remove and install the packing. The most important tool is a hook shaped long tool which can be can be inserted in the annular space of the stuffing box to remove the old packing.
Step 1
Make sure the pump is isolated and de-energized. The term “isolation” means closing of all inlet and outlet piping including suction, discharge and seal water systems. The term “de-energized” means that the pump breaker is in the off position and the pump has been drained. In broader sense, the term "de-energized" means that the pump is isolated from all sources of energy.
Place your “DO NOT OPERATE” tag on the pump as well as on its breaker. This will ensure nobody can start up the pump while it is being repaired.
Step 2
Loosen the gland nuts and remove the gland.
Step 3
Remove the old packing from the stuffing box. Clean the stuffing box and the seal water inlet.
Step 4
Wrap new packing material around the pump shaft as shown. Cut longitudinally along the shaft. This will result in packing rings with proper diameter.
