Lockout-Tagout

The lockout/tagout system goes beyond generic training and advocates the following:

a. Energy sources must be isolated from the equipment which is to be worked on.

b. Positive steps must be taken to shut off the energy sources. Installation of locks is a positive step.

c. Positive steps must be taken to de-energize the equipment which is to be worked on. Discharging of capacitors is an example of energy discharge. Draining and venting of fluids is another example.

d. Give the control of keys to the locks to the people who are in harm's way.

e. Train people in use of lockout/tagout procedures.
